What is HVO fuel?

HVO stands for hydrotreated vegetable oil, sometimes known as Renewable Diesel. Part of the paraffinic family of fuels, it is a fossil-free alternative to mineral diesel, resulting in up to 90% reduction in Greenhouse Gas emissions*. It is also specially formulated to deliver a cleaner burn, and produces significantly lower NOx and particulate matter**.

How is HVO made?

HVO is part of the paraffinic fuel family. It is a second-generation biofuel, also known as an advanced biofuel or renewable diesel, made from vegetable oils or animal fats. Unlike first-generation biofuels, these raw sources are processed using a specialist hydro-treatment to achieve high levels of purity. The result is a stable fuel with a long-shelf life and excellent performance year-round.

Frequently Asked Questions

HVO is very similar in formulation to diesel, so it can be used in nearly all the same applications that you would use diesel. But it’s important to check with your manufacturer first – or our experts can look into this for you.
The cetane number gives you an indication of a fuel’s combustion speed. Mineral diesel has a cetane number of 51, biodiesel’s is between 50 and 65, while HVO’s cetane number is between 70 and 90. This means you can expect a better starting performance and less chance of waxing in very cold conditions.
HVO is different from biodiesel. Although both fuels are made from vegetable oils and animal fats, HVO is produced differently.

Biodiesels (also known as FAME) are made by esterifying the oil with methanol. Ester is a chemical compound in biofuel that makes it vulnerable to water, oxygen and diesel bug, which degrades the oil when stored.

HVO, on the other hand, is processed through hydrotreatment. This treatment ensures it is a pure and stable product with a lower risk of contamination and degradation. For this reason, HVO has a longer shelf life.
First-generation biofuels, sometimes called FAME or UCOMe, are alternative fuels made from vegetable oils and animal fats. Second-generation biofuels are made from the same materials but are processed differently for a more advanced performance.

HVO is a second-generation fuel, which is part of the paraffinic diesel family. These fuels are synthetic oils with a low aromatic and naphthenic hydrocarbon content and no sulphur, which gives them a high purity level. This purity reduces the CO₂ emissions produced when the fuels are burned.
