HVO: A high-quality sustainable fuel solution for your home

HVO is very similar in formulation to diesel, so it can be used in nearly all the same applications that you would use diesel. But it’s important to check with your manufacturer first – or our experts can look into this for you.

The cetane number gives you an indication of a fuel’s combustion speed. Mineral diesel has a cetane number of 51, biodiesel’s is between 50 and 65, while HVO’s cetane number is between 70 and 90. This means you can expect a better starting performance and less chance of waxing in very cold conditions.

There is less risk of HVO causing problems with your machinery compared to biodiesels. It has excellent cold weather properties and ultra-low sulphuric combustion, which helps to extend service intervals.

HVO meets EN15940, meaning you can use it as a drop-in replacement. You don’t need to drain your tank or modify your equipment to switch to it. We always recommend customers check with their vehicle manufacturer for full compatibility.

HVO is different from biodiesel. Although both fuels are made from vegetable oils and animal fats, HVO is produced differently.

Biodiesels (also known as FAME) are made by esterifying the oil with methanol. Ester is a chemical compound in biofuel that makes it vulnerable to water, oxygen and diesel bug, which degrades the oil when stored.

HVO, on the other hand, is processed through hydrotreatment. This treatment ensures it is a pure and stable product with a lower risk of contamination and degradation. For this reason, HVO has a longer shelf life.

Yes, as HVO is FAME free it has a much lower risk of oxidation and degradation in storage, and therefore a significantly longer shelf life than regular diesel and gas oil. We always advise you to carry out regular tank care and maintain good storage conditions to protect your fuel.

No virgin crops are used in any of our HVO fuel and any crop waste is certified back to field/plantation level. We do not supply fuel made from Palm Oil, POME or any palm related source. Crop waste used to create our HVO is managed and certificated under international accreditation schemes.
