Summary

We’re proud to announce that our latest tanker safety innovation has been recognised with a UKIFDA Innovation Award. The award win celebrates an industry first that is transforming how engineers work at height on fuel tankers.

This award-winning solution was developed in partnership with our tanker manufacturing partner, Cobo, and reflects our commitment to continuous improvement, practical innovation and raising safety standards across our sector.

Rethinking safety at height

Working on top of a tanker has always presented challenges. While a number of safety systems already exist, many introduce additional risks, inefficiencies or operational complexity.

Common issues include:

•    Time‑consuming installation and maintenance.
•    Repeated clipping and unclipping, creating unsafe transition points.
•    Heavy or costly equipment requiring specialist facilities.
•    Slow and inefficient setup processes.

We knew there had to be a better way - one that removed compromise altogether.

A built‑in safety solution

Working collaboratively with Cobo, we developed integrated safety runners built directly into the tanker structure - an approach never before implemented in our industry.

As an engineer reaches the top of the access ladder, they clip their harness straight into the runner before stepping onto the tanker, removing transfer risk entirely. Once connected, they can move freely and safely along the vehicle with:

•    No additional setup.
•    No repeated clipping and unclipping.
•    No requirement for extra equipment.

The result is a streamlined system that prioritises safety, efficiency and ease of use. A patent application has been submitted for the design, reinforcing its originality and significance within the sector.

National recognition for innovation

We were honoured to receive the 2026 UKIFDA Innovation Award, celebrating the practical benefits and safety improvements this solution delivers.

Daniel Brain, Chief Operating Officer, said:

“This innovation is a great example of how we’re challenging long standing industry practices to make meaningful improvements to safety. By working closely with our partners and listening to the realities our engineers face every day, we’ve delivered a solution that removes risk rather than managing it - and that’s exactly the kind of progress our industry needs.
The award is a testament to the dedication, creativity and determination of our Fleet team, and to the power of close collaboration with trusted partners.”

Setting the standard for the future

The system was showcased on a Watson Fuels tanker at the UKIFDA event and will now be featured on all Watson Fuels trucks manufactured in partnership with Cobo going forward.

This enhancement represents more than a technical first - it’s a clear example of how we’re raising standards, investing in safety, and leading the way for our industry.
